Sparta Township Public Schools BOE: We recognize and appreciate all of your efforts within the past year. It certainly hasn’t been easy by any means. However, to maintain ease of routine, and to maintain the health and safety of ourselves, our families, and by proxy everyone else, operating on a half day schedule for rest of the year is most optimal.

Keeping in place the half-day model has largely benefited our situation in terms of education and extra-curricular activities. It allows ample time for students attending in person to have enough time in the classroom and with classmates, and it prevents students in the all virtual model from staring at a computer screen for more than four hours at a time. It also allots time for those — staff and students alike — who participate in sports and clubs, challenging classes with big workloads, as well as part-time jobs to create and maintain a comfortable, functioning schedule while allowing and promoting much needed time with family amidst these uncertain circumstances.

Not only has it been beneficial for student and staff’s lives outside of school, it is for the best interest of everyone in terms of public health. A full day would entail more people interacting with one another, which could further complicate contact tracing and inflate the number of close contacts. This would run the risk of more people getting sick and spreading it to others, which could jeopardize the planned end of the year events, the summer, and even the following school year.

The attached image is a graph outlining the amount of people in the STPS who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 over the course of this past year.
