Dyslexia, as defined by Miriam Websters Dictionary:
"A variable often familial learning disability involving difficulties in acquiring and processing language that is typically manifested by a lack of proficiency in reading, spelling, and writing""
Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities in children. Statistics show 1 in 5 children have dyslexia. This not only affects their ability or read or write, but affects various aspects of education and life. Many school boards do not have standard testing requirements for it, or do not recognize "Dyslexia" diagnosis and instead labels it "Specific Learning Disability". But most importantly, public schools are not required to provide Dyslexia specific curriculums. Curriculums that were created and targeted to teach these students, such as; Orton-Gillingham and Barton. Often, parents are required to hire private tutors, purchase the curriculum out of pocket, or find alternative options to teach their children.
If a child were to have any diagnosed physical handicap, there would be ADA regulations the school board were legally required to accommodate for. If a child were deaf or blind, had autism, or other specified learning or therapy needs, the school board would legally be required to accommodate for those needs. Why is dyslexia any different? Why should a child with Dyslexia, the most common learning disorder, be denied a proper education when there are curriculums that were created to teach them? Public schools, nationally, should be required to offer the same educational opportunities to ALL children!
Dyslexia cannot be cured, but with proper intervention and Dyslexia specific curriculum a child will have a much better chance at success in education!
Pleae help me legalize and standardize dyslexia curriculum in all public schools!
