Berg Elementary is the school zone that triggered my efforts for change.  As a concerned parent, and my love for all kids, I believe each school in our community needs to carefully assess each school zone and invest in pedestrian safety.

The crosswalk at Berg is faded and has a frequent lack crossing guards.  The parking available is off street, and dangerous because people pull out without 100% visibility.  Often, drivers zip out. A child was recently hit, it should be noted the child did not use the crosswalk and was in a blind spot.  But I believe as drivers, we are responsible because we know (impulsive) children are present,  and with extra caution regarding our speed and how we operate vehicles within school zones can save lives, and  prevent injuries.   I believe defensive driving needs to happen everyday and every moment; with a heavy emphasis when children are known in the area. This message targets school zone safety. 

I believe school zones should be identified with flashing lights (when children are present) signs should be clearly visable to drivers with lights, street signals and signs should clearly outline the zones-ESPECIALLY with high traffic streets Example: 3rd Ave W,  police should be carefully patrolling these areas and the fines for violations should reflect our message to drive carefully, crosswalks should be clearly outlined and well lit, and one crossing guard should be at each corner/crosswalk; at least 15 minutes before school starts and at the minimum,  5 minutes before is released.  I believe every school should support, implement, and constantly ensure their zones are staffed adequatly and send clear visable messages about their zone.

I believe every driver should be on high alert while traveling through school zones and by reassessing then investing in school zone safety, our efforts will bring the daily notice demanding our children are safe as pedestrians; including there will be consequences for reckless, careless, and dangerous behaviors.  

Driving safe and Defensivly is a choice, and unfortunately not everyone dedicates the deserved attention while behind the wheel.

We also need Continued education and reminders to support our childrens awareness.

I am asking for your support to ensure change happens because many schools need to invest more resources and energy  into their school zone safety. Our children's safety is paramount and demands our priority attention.
