******** IMPORTANT UPDATE 2 ******

SUCCESS!  WVUSD schools are all closing for 5 weeks!  Congratulations everyone!  And thank you to to WVUSD.

****** IMPORTANT UPDATE 1 ******

Thank you to all of you for your support. We now have over 2200 signatures on our petition, and our voices have been heard!  I have been trying since Tuesday night and I am having a lot of problems with change.org not sending out the update emails, so I am putting it here instead.  Please update your friends and family of the new developments:

WVUSD will allow us to have "Independent Study" effective immediately if we go to the school with one of the following 2 reasons:

1) Someone in the family or household has a pre-existing condition and we do not want to risk infecting them with the coronavirus (no need to go into who or what the pre-existing condition is)

2) Someone in the household is over 60 years of age and we do not want to risk infecting them with the coronavirus.

Again, thank you for your support.  Please spread the word as I don't know when the change.org update email will get sent out.

Thanks

Heinrich

Health and safety of our children and family members are our utmost priority.  For most of us, the single largest source of outside contacts we have as a family is through our children's school.

We are not asking to close the schools completely because we know the board has no authority to do so on it's own.

Rather, our goal for the petition is for the school to give parents A CHOICE to allow children to do independent study and/or online classes at home ONLY for those that choose to do so until the coronavirus crisis is over.

We understand that this is not for all families.  We do not want to force this on anyone, but we believe this to be what is best for our own families and we feel the school district should support us in this matter.  We also believe this should be done immediately before persistent community infections and transmissions become prevalent.

Due to the Coronavirus threat that is rapidly developing nationwide, it is becoming dangerous to continue to have our children convene daily and increase the risk of spread throughout the community.

As of 3/6/2020, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) warned all persons of age 60 or over, or anyone with chronic medical conditions (e.g. heart, lung, and kidney disease) to STAY HOME as much as possible. This includes going shopping, traveling, attending family events, going to the movies, and even attending to religious services.

I believe very strongly that the CDC will broaden this warning to younger age groups as the virus spreads and infection rates increase. Current studies show that children may not get sick as easily as adults, but they can become infected and asymptomatic carriers. These children can in turn spread the virus to their parents and grandparents.  It is also important to note that there are many grandparents that live with these children that attend schools in the WVUSD.

For the sake of public health, please allow families to have a choice to do independent study or online classes.
