My husband and I are parents of 2 School District 57 students. In less than a week we will be forced to make some hard decisions.  To return full time in-person school or not.

If we return our kids to school they will be exposed to 120 other individuals from their combined learning pods.  This number is of course compounded by each families work, extracurricular activities and friend bubbles.

We are concerned about our families health and this option scares us. Dr Bonnie Henry says we will see cases of Covid in the schools when they resume.  For us, this is not an acceptable risk.  Talking with numerous other families, we are not alone.

Naturally we began researching other options; however if we decide to pull our children out of their school, even temporarily after September 30th, they lose their seat.  I have been advised that and we may never be able to return them to their neighbourhood school and friends due to its full capacity, even though we live in that catchment area.

Our only other options are BC Distance Learning Programs which have vast waitlists and tell me to have another plan; and homeschooling which lacks the support our family would need to continue our children’s BC education and get the Dogwood certificate.

We do not truly have adequate options to both keep our families safe and provide our children with the education they deserve.

I am asking the Province, our School District 57 and local schools to provide what our family and many others need.  The opportunity to stay in their respective schools with teacher supported  learn from home options that follow the BC Education curriculum.   Less children in the school, make it safer for kids who are unable to learn from home as well.

I ask that my children not be penalized by not being able to return to the school and friends they have spent the last few years with should we temporarily refrain from sending them to in-person classes.

Please allow us to take a better safe than sorry approach this fall.  Sign this petition and add your name to the list to go with this letter to our School District.

Sincerely,

Christina Watts
