Send the kids back to school full time in Ontario.

With recent suggestions that kids should go back in cohorts of 15, on alternating days or weeks, what are parents to do on these other days?

The government is essentially assuming these last few months have been manageable for parents. That somehow online learning is working for both parents and children. Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto provided their stance on the return to school in Ontario as a guideline and they suggested the kids be in cohorts, especially the younger ones, however not compromising daily attendance. Some people may feel that their stance has been to lenient and not considering the risks of COVID-19 on the children, and their ability to spread the virus so easily. However, they stress that the lack of routine and consistency can greatly impact both a child’s physical and mental health. Let’s not forget the impact it has on a parents physical and mental health when they are working much longer hours from home trying to both care for their child and meet deadlines, or worse yet they cannot attend work as they don’t have childcare on these days off.

As a result, there will be parents that have had enough and will seek care centres, participate in nanny shares and bring care givers into the home which then just creates more contact points and potential spread of the virus. This then negates the rationale for smaller cohorts in an alternating schedule.

Society has done its part, we’ve stayed home at the governments orders, we’ve kept our children away from eachother, many have lost jobs or closed business’. Some have spent years of their savings to stay afloat during these unprecedented times. Now it’s time for Ontario the be more creative on how they can support parents in providing daily schooling. If kids aren’t attending school full time, then will this be represented in a tax reduction so we can seek childcare and support elsewhere?

Not every parent will feel that they support this view and that is alright, however those of us who do, our voices need to be heard.
