Crosswalk and crossing guard for RLP

Dear Councilmember Gray,

My name is Ashley McMichael and I am a Ward 7 resident and the President of the Rocketship Legacy Prep Parent Action Committee. Our mission is to inspire unity and parent involvement by creating an inclusive and supportive community where children are excited and ready to learn. We hope to see parents growing and excelling together as a family. United we can accomplish anything.  I am writing on behalf of the Parent Action Committee in order to bring to your attention a safety hazard outside of our campus. Rocketship Legacy Prep has attempted to get crossing guards at the crosswalk on Massachusetts Avenue and Fort Dupont Terrace and Alabama and Southern Avenues for over a year to no avail. Both these spots need crossing guards. Particularly on Massachusetts Avenue between Fort DuPont Terrace and Boulevard Lane, which a very busy street.  The cars on Massachusetts are often moving at a dangerous speed that could lead to a fatal accident given the number of young children who cross those streets before and after school. DDOT has communicated to Rocketship that Fort Dupont Terrace is not an ideal street for a crosswalk, and thus we can’t have a crosswalk or crossing guard at that intersection. Additionally, DDOT has communicated that only 280 crossing guards are available, and so we are on a waitlist. We don’t believe our children can wait, and so families at RLP are requesting a traffic assessment so that we can demonstrate how dangerous the previously mentioned streets are to our children, so we can get a crosswalk at the requested location.  We’ve received push back from DDOT stating we must obtain an endorsement from our council member or our ANC Commissioner to even request this assessment.  It really saddens me and makes absolutely no sense why the only crossing guard assigned to our school was placed at the corner of Massachusetts and Alabama where very few families cross.  Instead, most families use Massachusetts Avenue and Fort Dupont Terrace entrance because a large percentage of our families use public transportation. We have a population of over 400 students, with some students as young as three years old. We are requesting help before tragedy strikes one of our children.

We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to further discuss our concerns. Please let us know if you can speak to us at Rocketship Legacy Prep; that way, all over of parents will be able to access this discussion. We greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter.
