Allowing Maquoketa Seniors to Work On Online Courses at Home

Parents of Maquoketa High School Students Only Please! Currently at Maquoketa Community High School, seniors are allowed to work on their high school or college online class at home if they are scheduled to have it during first or last block of the school day. If a senior has an online class scheduled during any other block of the day and has a class on school campus after said scheduled online class, they are not allowed to leave. For example, if a student has a scheduled online class third block and then has a class inside of the high school or the college campus during last block, they are assigned to a classroom to work on their online course for third block and cannot leave to work on it at home.
My partner, Alissa Vance, and I believe that seniors should have the option to work on their online at home. We have conducted research that shows students work better at home and students themselves at MHS have said it's better for them personally to work on their online class at home, not surrounded by other students/distractions. Many students find it difficult to work on their online class at school or do not work on their online during the scheduled time because they prefer to do it at home or get distracted by others. It gives the seniors the same responsibilities they will be facing in college or the workforce, whether its making deadlines or making time for priorities. Also the responsibility of getting back to school on time and if they cannot be responsible enough for this, the privilege is taken away.
Our goal is for seniors to have the option to leave school, with parent's permission, to work on their high school or college online course in the comfort of their own home instead of working on it at school during the designated time in their schedule (3rd block). They would be allowed to leave after 2nd block (11:05 A.M.) and come back at the end of GST (1:50 P.M.) for their last block class on the school campus. Please sign our petition only if you are a parent of a Maquoketa High School student - at ANY grade level as this would affect all grades when they are seniors - and if you support our goal! Thank you so much!
