Why I Believe the Dress Code Shouldn't Be So Strict

The dress code is something that I’ve seen that most people disagree with and feel as if it should be changed. Most people would never dream of trying to change the dress code, but I’m to actually do just that. I’m not implying that we should change the whole dress code, but I think there are some things that should be changed about it, so it doesn’t come off as very strict and can give students the leisure to express themselves and not have the dress code put implications on people. I also think that if we change certain things about the dress code it will be more practical for people, money, and temperature wise.

The reason I believe the school dress code shouldn’t be as strict is because we should be given the freedom to express ourselves the way we want to because as adults you are given the ability to express yourself without rules telling us what we can and cannot wear, for the most part, and the point of growing up is to let you figure out who you are and experiment with different looks. That part of growing up isn’t achievable when students are restricted from expressing and experimenting with the ways we want to and can look. This is also important for the growth of students because the time will come when students will graduate and go into the  real world on their own and they will be able to express themselves without many restrictions, but if they aren’t given the freedom to experiment and express themselves at a younger age they won’t know how to express themselves when they’re given the chance. Expressing yourself through your looks is a major way of giving off a first impression, and most people who don’t know how to express them self because they grew up in a school with strict guidelines on what they can and cannot wear will most likely just wear sweats and a hoodie or some very basic outfit that can give the first impression that they aren’t a very exciting person or not really help them stand out in the crowd.

One thing that I also believe that should be changed about the dress code is the implication that women's shoulders and knees and such body parts that every person has are distracting. I believe that the implication is very offensive, and to all women and most people I know, men included, don’t understand how that could be distracting, it actually has become a joke among many students. In all honestly it is a very foolish implication, and I feel rather than telling women to hide their body’s we should teach men to control themselves, which would actually be a good life lesson for them so this world wouldn’t be as scary a place for women. This implication can also come off as offensive to men in the fact that you can be implying that they cannot control themselves which most students around my age can. Most of the time it’s not even the students who are distracted by the showing of a simple area of skin everyone has, it’s the teacher who’s distracted which doesn’t get talked about that often, but should start being questioned on their behalf because they are an adult trying to do their job, so their main focus should be just that: their job.

Which is why I have made my own version of the dress code that I believe will benefit students in being able to be themselves, but not come off very tramp-like at the same time. I am willing to negotiate on some of the changes, but I want to work towards loosening the dress code because I believe it would benefit students.
