After a number of incidents involving pupils and vehicles using Downing Road, Park Lane Primary (Juniors School) is applying for Downing Road to become a designated School Street.

An organised School Street closes the road outside the school from traffic for up to 45 minutes, twice a day, during school term time only. Any vehicles already parked in the road can stay or leave throughout the duration of the School Street. Only eligible vehicles can gain access to the road during the School Street closure.

Aside from the immediate benefit of making the school's immediate environment safer for all children there are other benefits:

• Children, families, carers and teachers reclaim their streets so they can walk, cycle and scoot to school safely
• School Streets help encourage even more families to get out of their cars and out walking;
• When families walk or cycle to school it can lead to healthier and happier children, and it helps everyone get some exercise;
• Safer school routes mean that children gain independence by walking to and from school themselves;
• There’s no congestion so road safety and air quality can improve.
