PETITION: The first major film about Mexican-American Civil Rights and Labor Leader Cesar Chavez is coming to United States theaters on March 28, 2014; however, Pantelion Televisa - Lionsgate has not made plans to show the film in any of Saginaw theaters. The film features Michael Peña in the title role of Cesar Chavez, the Mexican-American labor leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers, who fought for workers’ rights and became a Civil Rights icon in the United States after his death.
The film is directed by Diego Luna, the Mexican actor best known for Y Tu Mamá También. Since Chavez means so much to Americans, Luna says he was driven to learn about him following the birth of his son in the United States. Luna stresses that Chavez’s story is an American one. “I found out that no one has done a film about him and I don’t think it has been celebrated enough,” he said to The Huffington Post. “And I think it’s the right time to tell the story of Cesar Chavez.”
The movie, featuring Rosario Dawson, America Ferrera and John Malkovich is distributed by Pantelion Films, a studio created by LionsGate and Televisa to produce more movies for Latino movie-goers.
Celebratory events to commemorate the legacy of Cesar E. Chavez are planned every year in Saginaw, MI, commemorating his life and work. The American GI Forum of Saginaw has held the Cesar Chavez luncheon for 15 years, with all proceeds going to college scholarships. The Great Lakes Bay Hispanic Leadership, (GLBHLI) was created with the main theme, quoted by Chavez, ““ We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community. Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.”. The GLBHLI is a year long training program designed to provide individuals the opportunity to develop the skills and relationships to become effective leaders and provide a program that prepares and supports highly skillful visionary leaders for our region.
It is our goal to draw participants from across the state, specifically in mid-Michigan, the thumb area and upper Michigan and bring them directly to Saginaw to view this film. The release of this film, has been the topic of discussion of many local and state leaders, small business owners, faith-based and community organizations, families, and community members who are all planning to attend the release of this historic film.
We urge Pantelion Televisa - Lionsgate to join us in making history, in the name of the great American hero Cesar E. Chavez, who was the first American to unionize farmworkers achieving dignity, respect, fair wages, medical coverage, pension benefits and humane living conditions, as well as countless other rights and protections for hundreds of thousands of farm workers by showing Cesar Chavez, An American Hero film in Michigan theaters. Bring this movie to Saginaw County! You will get the attendance to make it worth your while!
