Dr. Laurie Manwell has taught HN320 for the last three years. She has always diligently worked towards ensuring that her students are both inspired by the content that she teaches and remain engaged in the material throughout the semester. She creates innovative ways to teach challenging concepts in physiology which we believe is fundamental to student achievement. For example, Dr. Laurie Manwell has students create 3D models of a neurophysiological system for a research presentation. This project allows students to develop a multi-level understanding of basic molecular processes within cells to the neural pathways that regulate the body through this hands-on experience. In addition, Dr. Laurie Manwell uses real life case studies presented in TedTalks and the novel “The Brain That Changes Itself” to explain how the neurophysiology of the brain integrates the physical, mental, and social domains of health. Moreover, she takes it a step further by using these real-life examples to teach the implications for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of health-related conditions and social policy issues. Dr. Laurie Manwell’s enthusiasm for the course is apparent through her persistence in getting a neurophysiology lab for her students this year. This lab has the potential to greatly benefit her students by allowing the transfer of classroom knowledge into real-world settings. Her passion for education and genuine interest in student success thrives every day in the classroom which is why we firmly believe she is the best fit for this position.
