I am in support of this renaming. I grew up in Palo Alto and attended Jordan Middle School. Unfortunately and at that time, I wasn't aware of the history of tDavid Starr Jordan! I am grateful to those who have started this petition!

Why would the Board of Education even suggest re-naming the school after Jordan or Terman the advocate of eugenics, sick

This is overdue. The names of public spaces, organizations and especially educational institutions must demonstrate honors that are inclusive of ALL groups, with zero tollerance for unresolved oversight, especially wherever children can learn lessons about the values and individuals society truly endorses.

I attended Palo Alto Schools for my entire K to 12 education. Our schools deserve to be named for individuals that reflect our values.

Our schools need to represent our community and our beliefs - in name as well as action!

Coming from a 2-generation PAUSD household, I have to admit it will be strange calling these 2 middle schools by different names. However, we should definitely not honor men whose beliefs demean and undermine our values of respect and equality for all. There are much more worthy individuals whose names should grace these learning institutions. I propose renaming the former Terman middle school the Mel Froli middle school in honor of this former teacher, current volunteer, and lifelong supporter of the Palo Alto schools, students, and their families.

I would like to see leaders and role models that promote equity and the prosocial skills and capacities necessary to make the world a better place for all in the 21st century. These men had their time to be honored for what good they did in spite of the harm they caused - a product of their ignorance and that of their time. Those times have passed and that ignorance is no longer worthy of promotion in this day and age or in the future we are preparing our kids to build. I agree, the names of eugenicists are no longer worthy of this honor. Let the names attached to our schools reflect the values we wish to promote into the future, not those we wish to eradicate from the past.
