Petition against the cessation of YMCA fitness & community services in Palmerston
We the undersigned respectfully petition the Palmerston City Council to reverse the decision that results in reduced community recreation, health and fitness services for residents and that the community be properly consulted.
We oppose the Council’s decision and declare:
The Palmerston recreation centre and aquatic centre are essential community services for Palmerston City, its residents and community groups. No other gyms or facilities offer the same range of community and fitness services. The current YMCA arrangement caters for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, and to discontinue this service will have a significant detrimental impact upon the Palmerston community.
Community members feel let down by elected representatives and council administration as there was no community consultation leading to this decision and there appears to be a lack of due diligence by the Council before making this decision.
1. Council reverse their decision to cease the provision of health and fitness services at the recreation centre and aquatic centre and consult with the community before making any further decisions regarding the use of the facilities
2. Council negotiate with relevant parties to agree an extension (with the current provider) of current services for six months while a robust needs analysis and consultation with community take place
3. The Northern Territory Government intervene to ensure that the buildings are used as originally intended when gifted to Council in 2007
4. YMCA consult with members and residents to find solutions that make continuation of these vital services financially viable
