For those of us living in Scranton, our once quiet(ish) small city has become significantly louder over the last few months. Large fireworks are set off, illegally, every night. After scouring different Facebook groups, the Hill Section is not the only area of Scranton affected by this dangerous, illegal, and (to speak frankly) annoying activity.

In the hill section, I have witnessed LARGE fireworks be set off in the street and bottle rockets pointed at homes, trees, and vehicles. SPD have responded to calls and talked to those shooting them, but it doesn't stop them from starting again the next night. My experience does not seem to be unique after reading the mayor's recent Facebook post and the comment section.

As pointed out by the CDC, fireworks can be harmful to pregnant mothers and as stated by the US Marine Corps, fireworks can trigger a veteran's PTSD. Pets and local wildlife also suffer during fireworks. Last week, a fellow Scrantonion died and there are risks for fires, injuries, and more.

By signing this petition, we ask that an IMMEDIATE and MANDATORY fine of $500 (or whatever fine is currently in place) be given to individuals setting off fireworks illegally. This means no warnings. People's homes, vehicles, safety and sanity are at stake. Children's fun and small fireworks excluded.
