Reverse the discriminatory bar on trade union rep standing for Ulster University Council

UCU Ulster started this petition to Paddy Nixon and

Goretti Horgan, a lecturer at Ulster University and a University and College Union (UCU) representative there, has been barred from standing as a staff representative for Council – the University’s governing body – on grounds of her UCU activity.

The decision is clearly one motivated by a collective aversion to trade unionism at the top echelons of the University. UCU is a UK wide organisation. The Union knows of no other Higher Education Institution that has identified a conflict of interest for a union representative to stand for a university council.

This election exclusion is discriminatory. It is out of step with Northern Ireland employment and equality legislation which state that employees should not be penalised on the basis of trade union activity, and that equality of opportunity must be offered to people of different political opinions, including trade unionism.

Staff representation on Ulster University Council is vital to ensure accountability and transparent communication. Staff at the University are regularly kept in the dark about developments and presented with faits accomplis, and Council is not provided with sufficient information about what is happening on the ground in the University.

We need an experienced staff representative on Council who will subject corporate initiatives to proper scrutiny, exercise due diligence, and ask the necessary probing questions.

Sign the petition to call on Paddy Nixon, Ulster University Vice-Chancellor, and John Hunter, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Ulster University Council, to reverse this discriminatory decision.
