ATTN: Pacifica Families - elementary schools including Ortega, Vallemar, Cabrillo, Ocean Shore, Sunset Ridge and IBL grass fields are in horrendous conditions that are unsafe for our children to walk, learn and play on. You may have noticed first-hand how poor field conditions are while walking your child to school or if you participate in AYSO soccer or PALL Baseball. A parent recently broke his ankle and we’ve had numerous sprained/twisted ankles injuries because of the countless hidden protrusions, ruts, trenches, uneven surfaces covered in weeds, thorns, holes, mounds from gophers, bare spots with hard soil exposed, patches of grass and standing water after the rains that has not properly drained for days after. The fields have been neglected for years. Families, PTO boards, AYSO and PALL organizations have voiced their concerns, even teachers at IBL will not allow PE to happen and restrict what they can do because of the horrendous conditions and the potential high risk of injury, yet nothing has been done by the district.

Pacifica School District has an obligation to maintain safe and usable fields for our children to play on. They should be accountable and liable for the injuries that have occurred. They’ve been irresponsible, careless with our children’s safety by neglecting the fields over the years. They have refused to even do minimal maintenance to keep the fields safe despite having funds to upkeep the fields, getting covid relief funds and making money from AYSO and PALL Baseball renting the fields. Pacifica families have offered to volunteer their own time and efforts to help patch the holes and they are not allowing it.

We need your signature to help push the district to do their jobs with the tax money we pay, to maintain the fields until they can be totally overhauled. Other districts in the peninsula have well maintained fields that have the same issues while Pacifica’s school’s have lacked the proper upgrades to keep-up with the wear and tear through the years. It is embarrassing to host other schools from other cities with our fields. The issue with the fields has gone on for years; what is the district doing with the money and why have they neglected it after so many years to let the conditions get so atrocious?
