The position of county coroner in Pennsylvania is an elected position. This means that the person in charge of death investigations quite probably is inexperienced, or untrained in the medical field.

Anyone can run to be elected coroner, which puts the public in a special danger, especially during public health emergencies, like Covid19. An elected coroner may not understand death reporting in pandemics, and could lead to lack of public faith in those reports.

This position is to change the position of coroner from an elected position to one appointed by the Secretary of Health and require at least a medical degree or specialized training in the medical arts.

It is too critical for public health to allow this to be a position where someone without medical knowledge continues to operate. While public input on who fills public positions is vital, all too often we are not provided with a candidate's full background and qualifications to fulfill the duties of the position of coroner. During this pandemic we have witnessed public officials promoting conspiracy theories over fatality reporting, leading to public mistrust. We need trained and educated professionals to serve as county coroners in Pennsylvania.
