Alaina Appleby started this petition to Oxnard College

Michael Abram, a professor at Oxnard College of Ventura County, CA, blatantly discriminated and berated a hard of hearing student during one of his class Zoom meetings. The incident was recorded and then shared to various social media platforms. In the video, the student communicated to her professor that she was unable to understand everything he was saying. She explained that because she was hard of hearing she has difficulty keeping up during the meetings. The professor accused the student for not paying attention, even after she repeated why she didn’t initially respond to him. Another student tried defending her and reminded the professor that because she was hard of hearing, she relied on a translator to assist during classes. The professor acknowledged the comment yet continued to berate the the young woman in front of her peers. He claimed she was only struggling because she was not “trying hard enough”. He continued to express his anger by suggesting she has her translator teach the lessons instead of him. The lack of professionalism and the unkind treatment towards the student was inappropriate and completely unacceptable. He had an opportunity to provide support to a student in need and he chose to humiliate her and disregard her instead.

As a parent, we often worry about our child(ren) and how they will be treated by others. We understand there may be times in their lives when they find themselves in uncomfortable situations. Times when they might be confronted by someone that acts inappropriately or treats them unfairly. Educators play an important role in their development and can greatly impact their lives. We trust they will provide the support and the knowledge they need in order to thrive. Students need educators who are sensitive to their needs to ensure their success. Educators who create a non-hostile environment for them to learn and offer compassion and a resolution when they are faced with challenges in the classroom.

As a parent of a hard of hearing child this video was especially difficult to watch. Seeing someone, especially an educator speak in a condescending tone and mistreating a student with special needs is discriminatory. His insensitivityand inappropriate behavior is inexcusable. This young woman was thankfully strong enough to speak up for herself, but she should’t have been put in that unfair situation. Instead of listening to his student and offering a solution, he becomes frustrated and creates unnecessary tension.

Please sign and share this petition with others. Professor Abram needs to be held accountable for his behavior and Oxnard college is responsible for addressing this issue immediately to show they stand against discrimination.
