Stop Over-testing Students in Oxford School District

We believe that the culture of testing that has permeated Oxford School District is harmful to our students and teachers. By investing money and time in optional standardized tests from organizations such as Northwest Evaluation Association and Renaissance Learning, Oxford School District has sought to improve state test scores at the expense of supporting our students to grow as critical thinkers and creative learners. Scores from these optional assessments have been used to reward and incentivize teachers, so that they are encouraged to teach less content and more test-prep strategies.
This additional testing has had no impact on the success of the most vulnerable students in our community. In fact, these additional tests have perpetuated the achievement gap in Oxford, which is among the largest in the entire state, by taking valuable time away from content instruction.
We ask that our school district stop spending money on all standardized testing that is not mandated by the state.
We ask that this money is instead used to fund professional learning for teachers around authentic assessments and best-practice methods for closing the achievement gap.
