On Saturday 11th June my boyfriend, Gavin Roberts, aged 28, was killed on the A34, in a head on collision. A car travelling southbound lost control and drove through the central reservation - hitting my boyfriend on the northbound carriageway. Gavin suffered a cardiac arrest at the scene and he was rushed to the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford. On Wednesday 15th June, Gavin succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced brain dead at 16:15.
Because of this, and because of the accidents and fatalities that happen daily and regularly on the A34, I am calling for the speed limit on this dual carriageway to be reduced from the national speed limit to 50mph. I also want speed cameras to be enforced to ensure that no-one else is injured or loses their life on the Oxford road. People treat this narrow dual carriageway as a motorway endangering themselves and others.
Oxford Mail claims, '... More than 1,800 collisions on the Oxfordshire stretch have claimed 56 lives over almost two decades and left thousands injured.
Records dating back more than 30 years chronicle decades of congestion, accident blackspots and numerous safety campaigns but figures revealed for the first time show the shocking reality – prompting urgent calls for action.
Up to 79,000 vehicles use the Oxfordshire stretch of the key link road every day and since 1994 a total of 2,040 collisions have been recorded claiming 56 lives, leaving 278 people seriously injured and 2,600 with minor injuries.
Please help me by signing the petition and sharing this post. We need the council to take note of this and for no-one else to be devastated. I want Gavin's legacy to live on and to get justice for all of the other drivers involved in incidents on the A34.
