Oxford City Council must include buying homes on sale for social housing amongst its highest spending priorities. It must also encourage the use of empty buildings in general to increase very low-cost homes in the City.

Further information:

Homes to buy and rent in Oxford are far too expensive. In fact, home prices like rents are amongst the highest in the country. About half of Oxford’s housing is privately-rented and at least one in five of such properties are not considered to be in decent condition by the City Council.

People with valuable skills, such as nurses and teachers, leave Oxford each year in search of cheaper places to live. The proportion of very low-cost homes in Oxford must be increased year on year to address local needs.

The quickest way to obtain very low-cost housing is to buy homes on sale. Homes like these within the City will help people to avoid commuting in from elsewhere, support local businesses, increase the City Council’s council tax income and create the possibility of very energy-efficient refurbished homes for a larger number of local residents. Rents from additional social housing will help the City Council to increase its income stream.

The 2nd best way to provide more low-cost housing is compulsory purchase of long-term empty buildings for housing. Apart from empty homes, long-term empty shops, offices and industrial estate buildings all have potential for adaptation. Addressing housing demand and homelessness is very urgent in the current recession with people losing working hours or jobs.
