You are the only store in Olympia where we can get Palo Santo, Mugwort, and Skullcap. You are the only store in which we can get traditional herbs so that we can practice OUR science and medicine that has been taught to us by our elders and ancestors.
You are also a store that appropriates, commodifies, and orientalizes our cultures. You sell products that are “ethnic” that are bastardized versions of things our abuelas made us, that are owned by someone who is not only NOT part of that culture, but doesn’t understand the SCIENCE of what they are making.
You are a store that teaches white people who are disillusioned with their own spirituality that it is acceptable to not really know another's but claim it as your own. When New Agers, Hippies, Beat Poets, etc, began exploring other cultures to find spirituality to fill their void, it was still illegal for our elders, WHO ARE STILL ALIVE TODAY, to practice their religion. The fact that people feel comfortable to claim ownership over cultural practices (even though they do not know how to properly practice them or that this is more than mysticism, its SCIENTIFIC MEDICINE), stems from white supremacy and colonialism.
Our traditions can not be bastardized and then sold to others in a two hour workshop. Although for a long time people of color have felt uncomfortable when having to shop in Radiance, the upcoming workshop “Shamanism 101” has not only offended but hurt the indigenous, latino, and people of color community here in Olympia. Huichol and indigenous elders have asked for decades for people to stop selling shamanism, that these people are unintentionally (because they do not know what they are doing) welcoming in spirits that attack INDIGENOUS people.
We ask that Radiance at least cancel this workshop, with no pay to Peter Brown. We ask that in the future, if this business wants to be holistic providing resources for this community, that they support the people of color and local tribes spiritualities in several ways: stock products owned, made for, and by Indigenous, Black, Latino, Muslim, South Asian, and Eastern Asian people; provide classes that are taught for and by people of the culture; employ more people of color who can accurately teach traditional medicine and science within the store. We also ask that Radiance continue this dialog by as a business watching “White Shamans and Plastic Medicine” and reading the website New Age Fraud, and then holding a forum asking how the store could better support the whole community, not just the white people of Olympia.
The reasons that we have written above of why we are frustrated are not all of our complaints. We hope to start a dialog with this store and the Olympia community. But if this store and community continues to “Stand with Standing Rock” and be in solidarity with “Black Lives Matter” but then continue to honor our cultures with bastardizing and appropriating our spirituality, then we will take further steps to protect our community. We will start by interrupting the harmful workshop of “Shamanism 101”. This will not only make it hard for those attending and facilitating, but will be traumatizing for the people of color who are already being harmed by this workshop.
