Demonstrate your commitment to normal birth by re-opening the Birth Centre at Calderdale Royal Infirmary, with a manager and enough staff and support to be sustainable.

NICE Intrapartum guidelines say 45% of women are at extremely low risk of complications and should not be giving birth on a labour ward. By closing its successful birth centre, Calderdale Trust is preventing up to 4000 local women from accessing suitable care.
There will be real impacts from this withdrawal of choice. Rates of normal birth in a birth centre are 83% whereas on the labour ward the same woman has only a 57% chance of having a normal birth (The Birth Place Survey). By closing its separate birth centre research shows it is significantly reducing the chances of healthy women having a normal birth. Healthy low risk women are also about three times more likely to have a c-section if giving birth on the Labour ward.
By closing the birth centre Calderdale is ignoring medical evidence and reducing the chances of healthy women having a normal birth. This increases health risks for mothers and babies and puts extra pressure on a labour ward that should be concentrating on caring for high risk women.
We therefore call upon Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust to demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of women and babies by re-opening its birth centre properly staffed and supported to ensure that the women in the area who should birth there can access the important service that they provide.
