Conor Reddy started this petition to Owen Keegan(CEO Dublin City Council) and

Waste collection services across Dublin are a disaster. Bin charges were introduced and collection services were privatised, which are costly, inefficient, damaging to the environment and socially unjust.

Companies pushed up costs to residents while pocketing huge profits - and because City Bin, Oxigen, Greyhound and Panda are all registered offshore, little or no taxes are paid on their profits.

Since bin collection services were privatised, illegal dumping has skyrocketed, Dublin North West has been particularly badly hit. In the first quarter of 2019, DCC spent €297,464 on the collection of illegally dumped waste - this is why we say privatisation has been a disaster.

Following on from a successful PBP motion in 2019, calling on DCC to bring waste collection services back into public control we are calling for:

  • A restoration of council control of domestic waste collection, and an end to rip-off bin charges.
  • Locally-hired clean up crews, rather than contractors who often cut corners.
  • A greater diversity of free recycling facilities, with the possibility of introducing deposit schemes like those that operate in some European cities.
