Petition to Emphasize P.E. in OUSD Elementary Schools

In America, 1 in every 3 children are either obese or overweight due to lack of exercise and the overconsumption of unhealthy foods. The increasing amount of children with obesity has become so overwhelming that it seems almost impossible to reverse it. It's become such a problem due to the fact that childhood obesity is the leading cause of early death and can create a number of health issues (like heart disease, diabetes, and sore joints) that can impact their daily lives negatively. Oakland has been facing this problem for the longest time being the eighth largest city in California, and here in the OUSD community, we plan to handle the problem at it's roots by encouraging kids to exercise more in schools. We hope to make P.E. in elementary schools more mandatory being that the kids only get 200 minutes of P.E. every 10 days which is not sufficient enough to keep up with the kids' bad eating habits. Having the schools give kids twice the 450 minutes everyday will reduce their weight gain and would satisfy their highly energy levels as well. Schools in Oakland have already taken action on the food problems, but have not paid enough attention to the necessity of more physical activity for the younger grades which will be more effective in taking action on childhood obesity. In the end, having kids get more physical activity will reduce the risk of getting obesity and will help the kids develop good habits that will carry on the rest of their lives.
