Start School After Labor Day

Start School After Labor Day
Why this petition matters
Our summer break starts in May when the weather only ranges between 60’s and 70’s. Then, by the time it starts to get hot and good swimming weather we need to start thinking about school supplies and going back to school way too early. We go back to school about mid August and the weather in August is in the 80’s and 90’s. So we are already sitting in a hot classroom while other schools are still on break enjoying the pool and relaxing. So that’s why we shouldn’t need to go back to school until after Labor Day. School is so stressful with homework, sports, grades, projects, test and so much more. According to the National Sleep Foundation the average high school students gets about 6.8 hours of sleep when they should be getting 8-10 hours of sleep. 87% of high school students are chronically sleep deprived. We should be able to go back to school after Labor Day to enjoy more time to relax in the sun rather than going through the stress of school work so quickly. We only have 198 sunny days in Illinois out of 365 days and we should be able to enjoy as much sun as we can get without already worrying about going to school so soon. Please sign this petition to go back to school after Labor Day instead of mid August!
