OUR RIGHT TO BREATHE CLEAN AIR

Communities throughout the country are objecting strongly to sites that process wood waste and pollute  the air we breathe with contaminated wood dust.

Evidence from these sites has provided information and a report from "A Citizen Science Investigation" published by the Breathe Clean Air Group states that the main contaminants in treated wood are:  arsenic, copper, chromium, fluorine, lead, mercury, nickel and zinc.  An email from the International Agency for Research on Cancer confirms that wood dust was classed as a Human carcinogen (October 1994)  To read the full report: http://bcag.co.uk/no-proof-of-no-harm-a-citizen-science-investigation-csi/

South West Wood Products is located in the Parish of Meare and Westhay, Somerset.   This factory is adjacent to RSPB Ham Wall Nature Reserve and also the Natural England Nature Reserve at Shapwick Heath

South West Wood Products have made an application to increase their process of waste wood to 150,000 tonnes per annum.   This is 100% increase on that already allowed by the Environment Agency.  This application if granted would not only pollute the very air that we breathe but would impact upon generations to come.

Local houses, cars, people, children, flora and fauna are continually covered in dust.  Families can no longer walk or cycle down the lanes.  Residents are suffering respiratory problems, itchy and sore eyes, dry mouths, and headaches.  The noise from the process is horrendous even at 250 metres, and can be heard as far away as Glastonbury, approximately three miles away.    Local residents cannot remain outdoors and windows must remain closed.  This is a serious intrusion into our lives and damaging to our well being.

Our precious Nature Reserves, visited by people from all over the country are at serious risk from the effects of wood dust.  Wildlife must also suffer the effects of both dust and noise from the process. Wood dust is a danger to health and that of the wildlife and pastures around us.

Please sign this Petition opposing the siting and operation of South West Wood Products.  We ask the Environment Agency and Somerset Planning Department to refuse this application and furthermore to protect this sensitive area from any future venture or development that endangers our health and our environment
