Students already have enough on their backs. Learning has been greatly disrupted and the clear majority of students agree that we have been given too much work per online lesson - sometimes more than what would be given in person.

Many of us are unable to cope with this strenuous workload, especially due to current conditions at home; distractions come at any given moment, usually completely out of our control. Furthermore, we often lack the ability to co-operate with other pupils when in lessons, meaning those who are struggling cannot always get the help they need. The end result is nearly always detrimental to the affected pupil’s mental well-being, which is already made fragile by the national lockdown.

Currently, the work multiplies rapidly to frequently extend long after the school day, and many of us are left scrambling to finish “class-work” from our previous lessons before our next is upon us. This has already caused some exhausted students, and sadly some of my own friends, to do the minimum amount of work, cutting corners and leaving things unfinished as a personal sacrifice for better coping.

When the solution is so obvious, this can be painful to watch - a lesser workload would encourage everyone to get work done without compromising the quality of a lesson (instead, merely the quantity), or discouraging perfectly capable pupils from working effectively; burnout would immediately become a lesser issue with the right solution.

It is understandable why large swathes of work are still being set - it is essential for everyone in the school community to ensure that our learning continues to be maximised so the least possible amount of work is missed, giving us the best possible chance at achieving our desired grades. However, this does not mean that work should be relentlessly bombarded upon us; the workload can still be acceptable, promoting quality work from students of all levels, instead of such a massive quantity of more simple tasks.
