Over the last 30 years Northern Ireland Hospice has cared for several thousand people with a terminal illness in Somerton House, Belfast. Our building however is old and no longer fit for purpose. The walls of our Victorian building are damp and crumbling, there is only one bathroom and sixteen patients share one shower.
Our vision is a new hospice on the Somerton site with 18 single en-suite rooms, each opening out onto newly landscaped gardens allowing for privacy, dignity and care of the highest quality in the last days of life.
We need your support to urge the Northern Ireland Executive to contribute £2.5 million to build a new hospice and help make this vision a reality.
This is Our Hour of Need. With your support we can make it happen.
- The Northern Ireland Executive
Over the last 30 years, Northern Ireland Hospice has cared for thousands of people with a terminal illness in Somerton House, Belfast. The building is now old and despite our best efforts, can no longer support the delivery of 21st century end of life care.
Our 4 bedded wards no longer offer patients and their loved ones the privacy or dignity that they are entitled to. There is only one bathroom in the facility and sixteen beds share one shower, while the walls of this old Victorian building are damp and crumbling in places.
Northern Ireland Hospice is committed to ensuring that care of the highest quality is available 24 hours a day, every single day of the year, in hospice and in the community. We know that the demand for hospice care is increasing as the population of NI ages and that an increasing number of people are being diagnosed with cancer and other debilitating illnesses. As a result many of us will, at some stage in the future, require hospice care.
We have been working hard towards providing a new Hospice on the existing Somerton site in Belfast. Our vision is a state of the art building with 18 single en-suite rooms that each open out onto newly landscaped gardens, allowing for privacy, dignity and excellent care in the last days of life.
The new Hospice can be open by 2014 at a cost of £11m and to ensure that the vision can become reality, we are asking the NI public to urge the NI Executive to contribute £2.5m to the project.
Our Hour of Need starts now. With your support we can make it happen.
