We want to get our school to re-think the skirt policy they’re activating in september

Come September Orleans Park School is enforcing a new policy surrounding girls skirts. The policy states that all skirts should be worn at a minimum of 20 inches, failure to follow the policy will be met with severe punishments. When the reasoning behind the sudden policy was questioned we were told by senior members of staff, that male teachers had complained about the length of the skirts arguing that they felt ‘uncomfortable’ and described students aged 11-16 as looking borderline ‘pornographic.’ We are aware that there is an issue with girls skirts and we are willing to compromise if our arguments are met with fair reasoning but as it is no one has informed the students of the change, or asked our opinion on it. Our school is supposedly and advocate for ‘student leadership,’ and student bodies such as school council are meant to give the students a voice, as it is we play no part in the school other than as students. The issues with boys uniforms haven’t been addressed even half as much as the issues with female student’s uniform. For instance the male students in our school are not faced with consequences for ‘low riding,’ which is arguably a lot more distracting for female pupils, then an above the knee skirt. We also think that the school seem to assume that all the parents of the students can afford to subsidise the constant uniform changes. Overall, we want more of a decision making role in the school, we want the skirt policy to be seriously reconsidered and we want a sincere apology for labelling female students as being ‘pornographic.’ As students we feel like an online petition is the only means in which we can get our voices heard,, sign the petition and help us stop normalising the sexualisation of young school girls.
