Since fireworks became legal in Iowa, we have had to deal with people not following the current ordinance and law enforcement not enforcing the ordinance. For weeks ahead of and past Independence day you can hear fireworks going off all over town often times past midnight. I encourage the city council to ban fireworks for residential purposes. Fireworks cause animals anxiety and pain, can trigger PTSD in veterans, make it hard for people working the next day to sleep, and litter our community. Please end the month long residential fireworks displays and ban all fireworks for residential use in the city limits of Ottumwa.
