Morgan McKay started this petition to Jim Watson and

The homelessness population in Ottawa is and will continue to grow unless we do something to stop it.

In 2018 a survey found approximately 1400 people living on the streets of Ottawa. Only 71% of the homeless population were found to be adults, making 29% of the homeless population to be people under the age of 18. 21% of the youths identify as LGBTQ. It was found that 24% of the homeless population in Ottawa is Aboriginal, while they make up only 2.5% of the total population in Ottawa. Finally, 5% of the population has served in the Canadian military or RCMP.

Addiction issues, unsafe housing conditions and inability to pay rent are the most common reasons for homelessness in Ottawa. The City of Ottawa needs to build safe and affordable housing for the citizens that are unable to afford it on their own. Once there is a roof over their heads, can the homeless population in Ottawa work towards finding jobs to support themselves and get their lives on track.

Please sign this petition in order to bring the attention of Jim Watson, the mayor of Ottawa, to understanding that there is a solution to ending homelessness in our city and that it is time for us to take action.

Thank you.
