Hannah Reed started this petition to Otsego City Commissioners

Backyard chickens are a growing phenomenon around the country, with many cities and states on board, and for good reason. Raising chickens allows families to live a freer, more sustainable lifestyle while allowing them to be more resilient. It allows people more choice while also being a help to the environment.

Chickens enthusiastically eat many common pests such as ticks, fleas, Japanese beetles, spiders, termites, slugs, mice, moles, and even small snakes.

It  creates more opportunity for youth in our area to participate in events like 4-H, where kids and teens get hands-on experience in areas like science, health, agriculture and civic engagement and get a chance to build leadership skills, confidence, and responsibility. It is a great way to get kids who may be uninterested or unable to participate in sports outside and into the community.

Farm fresh eggs. pasture-raised eggs, from chickens given space to peck for food, are more nutritious than industry-sourced eggs, with pasture-raised eggs containing two to three times more omega-3 fatty acids and one-third the cholesterol of factory-farmed eggs while also being higher in vitamins.

To eliminate any negative effects on the surrounding neighborhoods I am proposing that.

1. Only up to 6 chickens will be allowed

2. No roosters will be allowed

3. Chickens will be kept only in the rear yard.

4. All Feed containers must be rodent-proof

5. The use of plastic tarps, or other unsightly building materials is prohibited to build coops.

6. The coop and pen will be set back a minimum of ten feet from all property lines and be located a minimum of 30 feet from the nearest wall of any neighboring building.
