The Queenstown Lakes District Council is pursuing its plan to spill wastewater into the region's pristine lakes and rivers, despite strong opposition. It's seeking a 35 year permit to discharge wastewater into Lake Wakatipu, Lake Wanaka and the River Clutha.

Of the 193 submissions received by the Otago Regional Council on the district council's resource consent application, 190 opposed it, two were in favour and one was neutral.

Most were concerned with the environmental impact of discharging wastewater – usually comprising raw faeces, food waste, heavy metals and industrial waste – into Lakes Wanaka, Lake Wakatipu and nearby rivers and streams.

Those opposed to the plan include heavyweight organisations such as the Department of Conservation, Ngāi Tahu, Federated Farmers, Forest and Bird, and the Central Otago District Council.

Many were concerned with the 35-year term sought by the Queenstown council and suggested it should instead fast forward infrastructural developments to avoid the need to discharge into waterways.

Queenstown is known worldwide for it's unspoilt natural environment, as someone who has swam in the beautiful Lakes and Rivers in the region it is an OUTRAGE that the council are considering polluting these pristine waters. Yes there is a growing population and booming development in the region but they must look at other ways to deal with the sewerage requirements and NOT BE ALLOWED TO POLLUTE for 35 minutes let alone 35 YEARS!!!!
