Implementing Effective Wildlife Corridors in Toronto

Implementing Effective Wildlife Corridors in Toronto

The Issue

Canada is known for its very luscious forests and diverse wildlife. The government puts much pride into the preservation of the forests, agriculture, flora and fauna. But recently there has been a lot of mixture between the wildlife and human life, due to industrial and modernization with the occasional natural disaster. Many communities, have continued to flourish and spread far into the habitats of many animals. However, this causes for both disruption of human and animal life. For example in 2015, there were a total of 339 Public coyote sightings received by the City of Toronto Animal Services. As a result, much fear is shared amongst both animals and humans. The city of Toronto, under the guidance of the provincial government of Ontario, has proposed to establish Wildlife Corridors. A Wildlife Corridor is a link of wildlife habitat, generally native vegetation, which joins two or more larger areas of similar wildlife habitat. These corridors are critical for the maintenance of ecological processes including allowing for the movement of animals and the continuation of viable populations. They allow for enough separation between wildlife and human life that they can live with each other peacefully, but if a human would like to interact with nature they still have a the potential to.

This petition's purpose is to speed up the process of the development of this Wildlife Corridor. As Toronto continues to grow, development continues to impede on the natural processes and ways of life undergone by wildlife. If we don't restrict ourselves to specific areas, wildlife in the Toronto area will become a scarcity or may take the extreme route and become lost or extinct. Together we can make a change in the city of Toronto providing equal representation for animals' habitats and human habitats.

This issue is important to me because personally I am in constant amazement of this world and all it has to offer, from the grasslands to the wetlands, it would be shame to watch it disappear before our eyes, leaving the future generations with nothing to marvel at. Also, I believe that animals have the equal right to live on this earth that we humans do, but since we are more developed we take advantage of that and encroach on their lives, disregarding their will to live. I strongly believe that with enough support this Wildlife Corridor will be constructed and that animal extinction in Toronto will become a figment of imagination.
