Save the Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center

We are a growing, local effort organizing to preserve a precious local resource, the Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center (CMLC), which is slated to be demolished by Oregon State University.

For the past 11 years, the CMLC has been operating in an OSU property, a 107-year old house located at 128 SW 9th Street. The building is also the home of Casa Latinos Unidos and Fiesta Mexicana dance group. The CMLC provides many tangible services like language exchange and tutoring, citizenship application assistance, and hosts many cultural and educational events.

Perhaps more importantly, the CMLC provides intangible benefits such as building positive relationships and understanding between cultures, and serving as a safe and welcoming environment for immigrants, refugees and other vulnerable communities. Operating on donations and volunteers, the CMLC has flourished, and become an indispensable and invaluable asset to both the university and the city.

We strongly object to OSU’s plans to raze the building which houses the CMLC to build student housing and adjacent parking. We believe that the CMLC provides an immeasurable and irreplaceable contribution to OSU and the city of Corvallis, and we most strongly urge OSU to reconsider plans to demolish this building and the vital local resource it houses.
