Recently it was made public that Gina Newcombe, MIME’s Administrative Program Assistant was notified her position would be cut for budgetary concerns. Terminating her position is a dismissal of all the ways Gina keeps MIME running smoothly and of the importance of her position to the student experience. On top of that, doing this amidst Covid-19 is a disgrace. Gina constantly worked for the students, from constantly sending us job and internship opportunities, helping us enroll in special elective courses, to managing graduation photos and events to help us commemorate our time at OSU. The university is urging students to come back to campus in the fall, but the student experience is so centered around seeing her smiling face at the front desk ready to answer all our questions or celebrate our successes that returning without Gina would not be right.

Gina is loved for the personal advocacy she does for students. Gina is one of the most trusted faculty that students can go to for help. She has helped us get into special topics courses, like the late Nancy Squires’ quickly filled aerospace courses, or research/thesis credits, as well as other opportunities and scholarships for us. All MIME students know her from her frequent emails alerting us of opportunities and events on campus. When students go to the front office, she helps us find what we need and then comforts us when we're missing home/family/are struggling with depression/classes or just want someone to talk to. Gina always knew how to cheer someone up with compliments and encouraging words. When students are feeling like no one notices them, Gina has given us a sense of belonging in MIME and empowered us to continue our education.

Gina has worked at OSU for 15 years. Her largest priority is managing graduation. She schedules and takes pictures of all graduating seniors. This involves coordinating with students throughout the year, editing the images to make every single student look their best, and compiling all the pictures at the end of the year to make the senior composites. Students need and appreciate this service as the pictures are not just used to celebrate their graduation but also are great for resumes and job applications. On top of this work, she directs the Honor Societies Alpha Pi Mu and Pi Tau Sigma for the Winter Awards Banquet. Gina finds the highest achieving seniors in each MIME discipline and has plaques made for them and the student-elected outstanding faculty. She coordinates and advises the honor society students in reserving rooms, ordering catering, and sending out the invite to all students. In addition to this work, Gina works with our student clubs helping them find resources, organize events, and even participates in their public events photographing student work for their use in school and personal documents.

We the students do not support the decision to cut Gina’s position. The school of MIME has the responsibility to look out for its faculty, and it has the responsibility to be transparent and open with its student constituents about the decisions it is making. It is widely known that the school of MIME is in debt. And universities everywhere are trying to figure out how to stay afloat amidst the pandemic. However, the choice to terminate Gina’s position in the name of budgetary concerns is disingenuous and not respectful to the students’ needs. If the campus will be open in the fall, we demand Gina is there to welcome us back.

Let us all work together to overturn the decision!
