I am writing as a concerned constituent who wants Oregon to prepare for the economic and environmental effects of climate change.
Climate change is the defining crisis of our time, and Oregonians have the opportunity to lead the country with a clean energy economy. Droughts, superstorms and wildfires have cost our country hundreds of billions of dollars, and the losses incurred by ranchers, farmers and fishermen in Oregon have already weighed on our economy. As an Oregonian, I expect my leaders to take action that ensures our region’s prosperity in an uncertain future.
The United States is at an energy crossroads. The time has come to choose between the dirty energy sources of the past or clean and renewable alternatives. We need our leaders to protect our natural treasures and take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that clean energy will create for our region.
There is a consensus among economists that a price on carbon would be the most cost effective instrument to control greenhouse gasses and stabilize our climate. I urge you to author or support legislation that requires polluters to pay their fair share by putting a fee on fossil fuels.
