Keep Cedar Mill Safe - Say No to Marijuana Facility

0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,000!

To the OLCC, the petitioners included here are opposing the establishment of a marijuana facility at 730 NW Dale Avenue, Portland, OR  97229. The proposal includes hours of operation from 8am - 10pm, which is open far later than the Java Lounge and Foot Traffic stores next door.

The proposed location is very close to Sunset High School where 2,300 students go to school, as well as less than 1,000 feet from the playground of A Child's Way Kindergarten. The proposed location is on the path students walk home from school. In Colorado, where marijuana was legalized in 2000, an investigation by the Education News Colorado between the 2008 - 2011 school years, found a 44 percent jump in all drug-related incidents at K-12 schools statewide that were located near marijuana facilities. We need to keep marijuana away and out of the hands of minors otherwise we too will see an increase of drug related incidents at Sunset and Westview High Schools.

We are also concerned about the increased propensity for crime. A 3 year study completed in Denver showed an increase in property crimes in neighborhoods adjacent to marijuana stores (Journal of Primary Prevention). The Denver figures show that marijuana-driven robberies jumped by 50 percent between 2012 and 2014. We want to keep our Cedar Mill community safe and that means managing the types of businesses that are in close proximity to schools and neighbors.

We are also concerned about the decrease in our property values. Since this proposed business is so close to our neighborhoods, it will negatively impact property values. No one wants to buy a home where a business next door is open until 10pm, with people smoking weed loitering around, and higher property crime rates. Homes in Colorado within a half mile of marijuana facilities lost almost 10% of their value due to the proximity.

OLCC, please consider this request by all of the petitioners signed here and do NOT approve the marijuana facility at this location. Our community does not want the increase in student drug use, or property crimes that come with this type of business in such close proximity. Please keep our Community Mill area safe.
