For over a year now since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, incarcerated individuals in Orange County Jails have been denied hot meals. Instead, they have been served cold sack lunches 3 times daily. These sack lunches include moldy meat, spoiled fruit, among other issues. The toll that the lack of hot meals has been taking on the health and wellbeing of the individuals housed in OC facilities is immense: medical diets have been denied, religious diets are denied, and people's health is suffering.

The California Board of State and Community Corrections Title 15 Regulations require that incarcerated individuals in OC jails receive, at minimum, 3 meals in any 24 hour period. At least 1 of these 3 must be a hot meal. The Orange County Sheriff's Department is not complying with this standard.

Because of the pressure applied by the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, OCSD Jails are now serving hot oatmeal in the morning, and soup at night. But this is not enough when incarcerated individuals are forced to eat cold sack lunches throughout the day.

Prior to the pandemic, hot foods that were served in OC Jails included eggs, potatoes, sausage patties, and pancakes to name a few.

Please join us as we pressure OC Sheriff Barnes and Director of Custody Services Greg Boston into fully reinstating hot meals in Orange County Jails.
