Why this petition matters

Started by Esther Chavez

The Class of 2020 Seniors at Orange County High School of the Arts have worked so hard to finish this year strong, despite missing several meaningful milestones such as Prom, Grad Night, etc.  These events brought families and friends together to celebrate the end of the year, and a transition from 17-18 years of school to adulthood. Because of social distancing, Seniors have been unable to see and socialize with their friends and they will not be able to say goodbye and sign each other's yearbooks in the last weeks of school. These are important and meaningful moments to our Seniors, and I know I speak for all Senior families, that everyone has been feeling the impact of this. Graduation is a rite of passage that all students before us have been able to have, and all students after this year will surely have; our Seniors should not have to sacrifice their graduation due to COVID-19 issues.

A virtual graduation does not compare to the significance of being able to walk across the stage to receive a diploma wearing a cap and gown, scholarship cords and stoles, and leis from loved ones. We kindly ask that Orange County High School of the Arts does what is right, and postpone graduation to a later date, if not possible to be held on 7/9/2020, when the community can come together and celebrate our Seniors in the way they deserve. Our Class of 2020 Seniors should not have to miss one of the biggest and most memorable moments of their life.
