The class of 2020 are going through emotional times due to the events of the coronavirus. We’ve already lost the reminder of our senior year, our senior events (such as prom, grad venture, etc), and now we’ve lost our graduation.

OCPS has announced that all 20 high schools are hosting virtual graduations in June and are planning, but not over optimistic about, a possible in person one in July on the football fields.

Having a virtual graduation is not enough for all our years of work. Many students, including myself, have maintained a balance of AP classes, multiple extracurriculars, and volunteer work inside and outside of school throughout all 4 years of high school. We’ve worked hard and deserve to have a proper graduation to celebrate all our hard work.

A virtual graduation is not right; we deserve more. I am fully aware of the situation that COVID-19 has placed our country in but the class of 2020 is more than willing to wait until all of this is over to have a proper graduation. We’ve looked forward to this all our lives. Waving through a computer screen wearing our cap and gowns is not enough.

We’re not in a rush and we’re not asking for much. All we want is to walk across that stage.
