In 2011, damage caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee caused local administrators to close the Orange County Government Center and call for its demolition. A proposed $75 million building would replace the Rudolph designed Orange County Government Center. Many people would like to see better evidence that the Rudolph building can’t be restored and serve the community’s needs. Indeed, a recent FEMA report indicates that the damage from the 2011 storms was not as severe as prior studies reported. The people of Orange County, who will be bearing the economic burden of the legislature’s decision, deserve the most cost-effective plan.
