Maya Tenor started this petition to Oral Roberts University

Oral Roberts University is a school that is changing the world and specializes in so much more than just providing an outstanding education for its students. While this university is one of a kind, that does not mean it is perfect as there are some aspects of it which could be improved upon. For example, being a school focused on reaching the unreached, even those in the uttermost bounds of the earth, it is disappointing that we disregard a group within our own community: the deaf community. According to the organization on Deaf Missions, less than 2% of Deaf individuals worldwide claim to be Christian or have an active relationship with Jesus; that is only about 5 million people out of 250 million. American Sign Language is not accepted as a foreign language at this school, which inhibits us from impacting this community with God’s love.

One reason given as to why ASL cannot be accepted as a foreign language credit for any major is that it is not considered "foreign." When in fact, the definition of foreign is, "of, from, or characteristics of a country or language other than one's own." In accordance with this statement, ASL is foreign since it is not the native language of the majority of the students at this school. In fact, statewide, Oklahoma recognizes American Sign Language as a world language, and it is about time that our school does the same. This language is what can unite us with the lost.
