Recent times have produced an unsustainable and excessively stressful work environment for corporate optometrists. Optometry Australia is aware of this but nothing is being done. There is a whole generation of optometrists that are experiencing burn out, feeling undervalued and underpayed given optometrists importance in the community.  The purpose of this petition is to highlight the amount of Optometrists that feel this way. The solution involves optometrist not being treated like retail staff, including more admin time and longer lunch breaks. It also involves an incentives for optometrists like obtaining a percentage of Medicare for the work they do. Weekend work should be rewarded accordingly also, with a standard base salary that is acceptable that is then increased based on weekends work. The fear is, that if nothing is, the longevity of working as an optometrist will not be sustainable. It’s time for Optometry Australia to become less passive.
