Opposition to Monroe Dr. Diet

The City of Atlanta is proposing taking Monroe Dr. from four lanes to three lanes between Yorkshire Rd. and Tenth St. The plan is for two traffic lanes and one turning lane. With Monroe virtually impassable during peak times, the inevitable result is going to be increased traffic into our neighborhoods. Most importantly, this will cause significant safety issues within the residential areas of Morningside and Virginia Highlands. The increased traffic on our residential streets will cause more traffic incidents and will be dangerous for our children who play along these streets and other pedestrians. The road diet will not necessarily reduce accidents, but it substantially increases the risk of accidents in our neighborhoods.
We believe that this proposal is being pushed by a group of well-meaning activists who want to encourage alternative transportation but who do not represent the prevailing view in our community. Many of us agree with the long-term goal of alternatives to car traffic, but we strongly disagree with a proposal that will create more safety issues than it solves.
