Why this petition matters

Started by Jimmy James

This is a petition to stop the horrendous proposal of turning the beloved St Johns Church Hall in Rogerstone, in the middle of a much visited and active graveyard, into flats. Once a vibrant, bustling heartbeat of the community, St Johns Church Hall has been left to degenerate by the Church and now they want to sell it for financial gain and turn it into six large flats - right in the centre of and overlooking an active graveyard where generations of loved ones have been laid to rest for what was promised as a peaceful and serene final resting place. The community feel heartbroken that the Church Hall, which is in such close proximity to the resting place for their loved ones, could be sold off with little thought for grieving family members or those laid to rest here - some very recently, and this is our chance to let the Church in Wales, Newport City Homes and Newport City Council know the depth of feeling and sadness this community has towards the proposal. Please let them know by signing this petition and add your stories of your family and loved ones who are buried there how this will affect you and many people throughout the community.

Rogerstone is a village, first and foremost, and aside from the awful plans to add flats in the grave yard, we also oppose these plans based on the fact that Rogerstone does not need more social housing or homes. We have neither the capacity nor infrastructure to support this when we consider things like access to local doctors, traffic on the roads, parking etc. Rogerstone has already been massively redeveloped in recent years at Jubilee Park, add to this the St John’s court development, redevelopment at the former Old Oak Stave site and I think you’d agree that we are already at straining point.

We hope you will support our community in raising awareness about this.

Thank you!
