Oppose Leeds City Council's planned bus lanes on the A61 in Alwoodley

Leeds City Council are proposing to install 2 bus lanes on the A61 in Alwoodley. One heading north on the approach to Alwoodley Gates. One heading south approaching the Ring Road A6120. Full details of the scheme can be seen at www.leeds.gov.uk/connectingleeds .

We, the undersigned write to make clear our unreserved objection to the proposed bus lanes, both Northbound and Southbound on the A61 in Alwoodley.

We object to this proposal as we know, as local residents and users of this road network, the very serious impact it will have on traffic congestion and traffic flow. The suggestion, that moving regular traffic onto a single carriageway, as is envisaged by the proposals, will not have a significant impact on traffic congestion and traffic flow is, frankly, ludicrous. That models suggest otherwise is all the more worrying.

We object to this proposal as the marginal gain in bus journey times do not justify the significant disruption this proposal will cause, both in its implementation and when in place on the severity of traffic queues. There is also no evidence that bus journeys will be any more reliable as a result of these proposals.

We object to this proposal as we do not accept the key premise of this proposal, that more residents will switch to using the buses. Our experience is that they will not.

We object to this proposal as we are concerned about the increased air pollution that will arise from the increased traffic congestion. This would in fact be the opposite to the stated aim of improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions.

We object to this proposal as we are concerned about the negative impact this scheme will have on those living in the houses fronting onto Harrogate Road and those who need to turn through the proposed scheme as part of their daily journeys.

We object to this proposal on the basis that it presupposes a Park and Ride north of Alwoodley Gates, yet such a Park and Ride is not included within the current proposal (and may indeed not be deliverable in any event).

We object to this proposal on the basis that it is seeking to remedy a problem that is nowhere near as bad as the suggested scheme. While there is traffic at peak times, it is not as bad as other parts of the city and for a city the size of Leeds, not an excessively severe issue to merit this heavy handed intervention.

Finally we object to this proposal as it is quite clear that it does not enjoy any level of support amongst local residents.

In conclusion this proposed scheme is unnecessary, unhelpful and unwanted. We urge you to take on board our views and objections and not take this scheme forward.
