Oppose Honolulu Rail Plan

Oppose Honolulu Rail Plan
Why this petition matters

Hawaii's Rail Project on Oahu needs solutions now. Oahu is our island home and continuous construction issues compounded by budget overruns and costly legal crises have undermined the noble intent of the project that started more than 20 years ago. Our families and communities are ultimately paying for it. We believe it's not too late. The institutional mismanagement, special interests, politics and community complacency have created the perfect storm for corruption and failed accountability.
We urge the Federal Transportation Authority to scrutinize HART’s (Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation) Revised Recovery Plan in these areas:
ridership & traffic
capital & operating costs
sustainability & sea-level rise
We oppose HART’s Revised Recovery Plan that was approved by the City Council of Honolulu in May 2022 due to these and other flaws:
Plan reduces both service and ridership. By truncating rail, HART predicts that there will be a 16% reduction in ridership.
Plan defers the Pearl Highlands Parking Garage which is a major component that link Mililani, Wahiawa and North Shore communities.
Plan makes more promises for funding the final leg to Ala Moana.
We implore the FTA to require HART to study utilization of the Lagoon Drive Station as a Transit Station and extend the Western Terminus into Kapolei as a more viable means of increasing ridership. More riders decreases the burden of subsidizing operations and maintenance costs.

We are a coalition of pro-mass transit citizens who want a sensible, affordable and impactful solution to Honolulu’s Mass Transit System. We are against continuing the current path of the rail to Ala Moana at a cost which has a $3 billion shortfall with no reliable funding support, is based on stale ridership projections, and will not carry passengers for another decade. The rail project should be revisited in its entirety, including ridership projections, financial commitments, and construction estimates and schedules. Learn more at RideNowHonolulu.com.
